When confronted with the idea of Veteran’s Day today I can’t help but conjure up mental images of my grandfather piloting planes bringing supplies to soldiers during WWII, close friends who I grew up with who served bravely in the Middle East, and finally those who are currently serving in troubled areas not questioning their important yet dangerous duty.

Driven to Serve
I’m always amazed at those who are willing to sacrifice their lives for something they believe in. Those willing to run towards danger versus those who run from it. Policeman, firefighters, and soldiers alike completely blow my mind. I struggle to find things within my own life that I can compare it to. What drives a soldier to pay the ultimate price?
Protecting Your ‘Family’
My first possible comparison would be how I would protect my wife and children when presented with a threat to their security. I pray for the burglar, mugger, or even a handsy ex-boyfriend who messes with my family. It will not be pretty. Maybe that’s what it is. Soldiers see their countrymen as family and any threat that comes to them must be met with force, protected from harm. Makes sense, but the answer still seems simpler.
Pigskin Battlefield
My thoughts turn to the nearest, but not closest by a long shot experience I’ve had in my life that I can compare to serving in the military, playing football. I can remember the deep, unspoken relationship with my teammates who became family. Guys I would do anything for, including sacrificing my body. What else would motivate you to grab onto two 300+ pound guys and drag them into the dirt? So your linebacker behind you could make the tackle of course! It is the community of football that I think brings the players together, for one cause, to win, at all costs. Just ask my busted shoulder which as painful as it is, still brings a smile to my face.

Community of Common Purpose
That’s it, I think. It is brotherhood and sisterhood, community for a common purpose that drives soldiers to serve their country and risk their lives, without question. The proof is right in front of us today. It is what we all see today on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and the like. Past and present soldiers posting pictures of themselves alongside their brothers and sisters who helped them, protected them, and bled with them.
This non-soldier, ex-football player, community lover thanks each and every one of you for what you do, which is what most of can’t do, and improving the lives of those you serve for. Blessings to you, your friends, families and most of all your brothers and sisters who were in the trenches with you.
Happy Veterans Day!
