You ever have one of those moments when a singer’s voice stops you in your tracks? Rachael Price has one of those voices. She brings a modern twist to the sultry sirens of the past and when combined with the voices and fantastic instrumentation of her fellow band members Mike Olson (trumpet/guitar), Bridget Kearney (stand-up bass), and Mike Calabrese (drums) the results simply speak for themselves.
What genre is this you might ask? Honestly it is a bit hard to pin down. Calling on an eclectic mix of jazz, traces of folk, R&B, and rockabilly I would say Lake Street Dive is more of a stew than a single ingredient than when mixed together properly, tastes amazing.
I was first introduced to them when they released 2012’s Fun Machine, a set of fun, funky, and unique cover songs that included I Want You Back, Rich Girl, This Magic Moment, and my personal favorite, George Michael’s Faith.
My wife, teenage daughter, and young son all light up still when I throw that on during our morning rush out the door. It is a welcome respite from the electronic sound that is currently hogging the airwaves right now. Not very often lately does one get to hear the rattling of fingers on a stand-up bass fret.
Fresh off a jaw dropping appearance last week on Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report that are poised for a break into the mainstream with their release of Bad Self Portraits. Here is a video of them performing their lead single, You Go Down Smooth.
